Oh My God Green Day, Where the Hell Did that come from?

So, there’s this band called Green Day, right? They release an album in 2004 entitled American Idiot, and that’s it.

They release this epic album, and we don’t hear any news albums for five whole years.

Why the wait? Did we start to think that maybe they were coming to an end? Or, maybe they became a little lazy? Maybe they were just hard at work on an album that will take a long time to make absolutely perfect?

I think it was that last one, because what these guys came up with is absolutely amazing.

10 days ago, March 15th, they released a new album entitled 21st Century Breakdown. This is their first album to be released after American idiot, five years ago!

I’m really impressed with this album. I honestly thought that after American Idiot, that would be the last I heard from them. Now, I really don’t follow Green Day, so my statement about thinking they were over was just a complete guess, but I was obviously wrong. I’m so happy I was too.

You May Have Already Heard Them — “Know Your Enemy”

I’ll bet that if you watch TV, you have already hard Green Day! The Digital Music Giant, Rhapsody featured “Know Your Enemy” in their latest commercial. Does it look and sound familiar?

They have already released the music video for “Know Your Enemy,” but I’m not sure about them having out any other videos for any of their other amazing new songs.

What the Album is About

This album has a consistent style throughout each song. Their last album, “American Idiot” was a story about a lot of things focusing on a character the lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong created. Throughout the different songs, some new characters were introduced, and the lyrics went on to describe the actions of those characters. I thought that was pretty damn cool. But what is 21st Century Breakdown about?

A quote from Billie would sum it up quite nicely I think:

A snapshot of the era in which we live as we question and try to make sense of the selfish manipulation going on around us, whether it be the government, religion, media or frankly any form of authority.

Really, any bands I listen to all have something to do with a meaning just as 21st Century Breakdown does. Those bands are usually punk rock, so obviously Green Day would fit in really nicely to my play lists.

Check This Album Out, I’m Serious

For real, if you have some extra money in iTunes or something — buy this album. If you’re into music like this, or weren’t aware that Green Day made a new album, then get on it and BUY IT!

For those of you who already have it — what do you think? What’s your favorite song from it. Mine would either have to be “See The Light” or “21 Guns.”

So that was my little review of this album. I think it is absolutely fantastic, and I know what I will be listening to all week.

Cool post Alex :)

I used to be quite heavily into Green Day, especially their album ‘International Superhits’, but stopped listening to them when I discovered other genres of music. Still, I’ve listened to some of the new album now and it’s awesome :D

I never really like International Superhits, I mostly started listening to them after American Idiot. But I do like that song on the album “Good Riddance (Time of our Lives).” That was our 6th grade graduation song we had to sing, haha.

Lol, I can’t imagine our whole school singing Green Day… would be the most surreal experience of my life seeing as most of them are wannabe gangsters :P

I love Green Day and American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown are both so meaningful. My favorite song is the Static Age. I was wondering what they meant by Static so i looked it up on dictionary.com and im gonna go with these
Static- Showing or having no change + a condition of social life bound by tradition.

I love the Static Age as well! I think it’s a prime example of what Green Day is all about.

Haha, I think East Jesus Nowhere has become my favorite song. Not just for the melody, but for the meaning behind it!

Good post Alex
I have this album downloaded on my computer and yes it’s really awesome. As a 12 year old kid I don’t like the picture but the songs are amazing. The best song that I found in the album was “see the light”. Keep it up.

I used to be hooked onto “See the Light,” but I kind of grew out of it and am now hooked on “Static Age!”

Nice review but you do realize Green Day has been around since 1987, right? Or am I just really dating myself?

If you haven’t check out Dookie, which was huge when I was in the 5th/6th grade (sold over 10 million copies)…man I really am dating myself here. Thanks for making me feel super old ;-)

I really like their latest two albums but Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod were all awesome too.

Also, do take a look at the cover art for Dookie. Sure, in retrospect it’s immensely immature but at the time we all thought it was amazing, epic, and a breakthrough in CD (yes, CD) artwork.

this is really an amazing album. i love the story about gloria and christian. such completely different people. kind of reminds me of Jesus of Suburbia and Wake me up when september ends. both romantic and rebelling, this story really brings the people that live here in that era. i can remember spray painting on walls tee peeing houses. then i remember a bunch of my friends chickening out when we threw a party. i have friends that are saints and friends that just want to kill you all
